Doing nothing

(Day 54) I did absolutely nothing today.

I was sitting at the tram station waiting for a tram to St Kilda when the weather went from nice to nasty. The metamorphasis took a whole 15 minutes. So much for a day at the beach.

To stay dry, I made my way over to the State Library. I could spend a couple hours there while I recharged my laptop. Tonight I had a long train ride from Melbourne to Adelaide. With fully charged batteries, I'd have some music to listen to during the trip. The library was filled with students studying hard. I sat down at a desk, plugged my electronics in, and just wasted away the afternoon.

My train left at 10:00pm, so again, I found myself just wandering the streets. Melbourne had a comedy festival going on, so I watched a couple street performers do their act. I ducked into an internet cafe and spent an hour catching up with worldly news. Isn't it ironic? While I'm traveling the world, I usually have no idea what's going on anywhere.

I returned to the train station around 8:00pm to pick up my bags from my locker. One change I've noticed about myself is my perception of time. Time seems to fly by, even when I have nothing to do. Passing ten hours has become incredibly easy. It could be because I'm always on foot, so getting from one point to another takes longer than usual. But even sitting around at the train station for two hours no longer seemed like an arduous task.

For some reason, they decided to play a movie during the first couple hours of the train ride. I don't think anyone watched it. A collective sigh of relief could be heard when the movie ended and the TVs were turned off, finally giving us some peace and quiet. Despite sitting next to a large Australian pensioner who occasionally overflowed into my seat, the overnight train proved to be much more comfortable than the overnight bus. I managed to fall asleep for about six hours.

So I guess I really didn't do nothing. I did cover about 700kms of land. It just wasn't very interesting.
