Planning
(Day 193) I don't consider myself a travel writer, because that would make it seem like a job. I blog because its fun, I like getting feedback, and it helps me remember what I did on my trip. I've already cheated a bit, skipping days in Thailand in order to maintain some semblance of privacy, so I can no longer claim this to be a 'daily travelogue', but I still feel days (like today) when I don't do anything of interest should be noted.
Every day I fall behind, I tell myself, "I need to catch up, I need to catch up." It's almost like falling behind in class. Work begins to pile up, and the task of completing it begins to look more and more daunting. I entered Hong Kong four days behind in my blog, and a week later, still found myself four days behind. Entries, depending on content and how distracted I am while writing, take anywhere from an hour to three to finish. So that's pretty much what I did for the greater part of today.
Just as well, since it was raining outside anyways. Between after naps and hacking away on my Dell C400, the afternoon just flew by. Hong Kong was meant to be a pit stop for me, where I could refuel and catch my breath. Other long term travellers have said it before. The half year point is when people begin to get road weary. They've also said though, that eventually they picked up their second wind, which I hope is true, because China's got a lot of attractions, and I want to have the energy to see them.
Flipping through my Lonely Planet China book, I mapped out a rough itinerary. I didn't plan on buying another LP book; My experience with their Southeast Asia edition wasn't the greatest. Ideally, I would've taken the Rough Guide, which I'll give high marks to after using them for New Zealand. But it was the only one I could find stocked in Hong Kong bookstores, and something is always better than nothing.
In any case, my proposed route will take me from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, from which I'll move west to Guilin. Continuing west through the Yunnan province, I'll somehow end up in Tibet. Back east to the capital of Sichuan, Chengdu, and after taking in the sights there, moving on to Chongqing for a cruise down the Yangzi River. Shanghai will conclude part one of tour through China, and from there, I'll probably fly to Japan and/or Korea before reentering via Beijing. As always though, things can change on a moment's notice!
Thanks to everyone for their support and comments! Knowing people are reading keeps me motivated to continue the updates!
