Bizarre Vilnius

IMGP4530pic.JPG

(Day 272) Just as sightseeing in Thailand revolves around temples, a tour through Europe is dominated by churches and museums. Vilnius' Old Town would be the third such place I've visited, and certainly not the last. In an attempt to avoid redundant entries and having things become 'old', I tried to seek out some of the more bizzare today.

Like the bust of Frank Zappa. I actually have no idea who he is. A bit a research revealed that he was an American rock and roll legend who passed away in 1993. Apparently, the world's only memorial to him is located in Vilnius, and it's not even that glorifying a monument. I actually walked past it once without realizing it; Located in an obscure corner of a parking lot, it's really easy to miss. I'm sure he'd be proud of it though, after all, that's how I want to be remembered too. In a random country next to some graffiti of Eric Cartman.

Speaking of random countries, have you heard of the republic of Uzupis? It's an official breakaway state of drunks and dreamers, considered harmless by Lithuanians, who have gone so far as to promote it as a city attraction. After all, anybody that includes the lines "Everyone has the right to love and and take care of the cat" in their constitution can't be taken seriously. And if the Uzupians were really on the ball, they would've bothered securing their borders, instead of letting people like myself walk unhindered into their land. At least they have their own national monument...

Uzupis wasn't a very happening place today, and I spent more time there than it warranted. I returned to the Old Town and had a pizza before returning to Cathedral Square and the Gedimono Tower behind it. Somewhere in the square was the secret Stebuklas tile, the tile marking where the human chain from Tallinn to Vilnius in 1989 ended. Tallinn to Vilnius... that's a pretty lengthy chain if you think about it. The tile is supposed to grant a wish to whoever finds it, and it certainly was an elusive little bastard. I didn't know whether it was inside the cathedral or outside, and what distinguishing characteristics it might have. I probably could've asked someone, but that would've taken all the fun out of it. It took close to half an hour, but I finally found it. My wish? I've already said it; Someday I'd like a random country to put up a memorial of me!

Thanks to everyone for their support and comments! Knowing people are reading keeps me motivated to continue the updates!

I hear a lot of backpackers are very much into the party scene. I'll probably mix between what your doing and that. Drinking is expensive and kind of a waste sometimes.

What's Zappa doing over there? He was born in the states ... maybe of Lithuanian descent?

It's ok to love your cat, just don't LOVE your cat (ever see "The Truth About Cats and Dogs"?).

Yummy pizza :)
