Kosice

IMGP4983pic.JPG

(Day 280) Should there be a purpose to traveling? Besides just looking at the sights and scenery and being amazed at the beauty man and nature came up with? Is the real prize interaction with locals, however brief, and gaining insight on unfamiliar customs? If it's the latter, I - and most other backpackers - are going about it the wrong way. I should be spending weeks in each town, learning the language, to truly immerse myself in foreign cultures.

My loft, which I had all to myself, almost convinced me to spend another night. It was one of the nicest places I've stayed at, and it cost less than most hostel dorms in Europe. Kosice, like every other European city I've been in so far, has a tourist scene based primarly around the beautifully renovated Old Town. Largely pedestrian, it's wide enough to hold pleasant parks in the middle. Religious monuments serve as decoration for the town square, while Europe's easternmost Gothic cathedral looms over it all. Equally exquisite structures like the State Theatre compete for attention.

"What a difference a nice day makes!" I thought, circling the Cathedral of St Elizabeth to get looks at different angles. If I was a photographer, my motivation could be the search for that perfect picture, but my simple point and shoot camera can hardly be considered professional equipment.

It doesn't take long to walk the entire length of Hlavna, even after slowing my pace. I visited a supermarket and ended up throwing away the carbonated drink I bought - it tasted something like non alcoholic beer. I had lunch at a fast food joint called Mr. Kebab, then burnt off some calories by walking to the post office. Running out of stuff to see and do, I returned to my hotel lobby and wrote in my notebook while the VH1 played music videos from the 90's.

A commercial for an American green card came on. "You too can live the American dream!" blared the TV, showing images of happy families having picnics and bikini clad models walking on beaches. And people say American TV is trash...

(Has anyone seen commercials like this before? I never watched TV much to begin with, but I'm don't believe an ad like this would be allowed to run back home.)

By 6:00pm, I was back at the train station to board the Budapest bound train, which, according to this sign, was only 267km away. My time in Slovakia only numbered three days, hardly enough for me to claim I've traveled the country. I think I can only say I've been here.

Thanks to everyone for their support and comments! Knowing people are reading keeps me motivated to continue the updates!
