Sick Day
(Day 268) I think I've had a respectable attendance record so far. I've disappeared for a couple weeks early on, but for the most part, I've been able to plod on through minor aches and pains. It had to happen eventually though. Today, on Day 268, I'm officially taking a sick day from my vacation.
I woke up feeling like shit. It wasn't serious - I didn't have a fever or anything - but I was convinced the quickest way to recovery was to spend a day or two indoors. Sprawled out on my bed in the infirmary, I mean, dormitory, I stared out the window at people going about their everyday routines.
For a day, I lived vicariously through other travellers.
"I lost my wallet!" I heard a girl exclaim. "Right after I withdrew 150 lats! (Approximately US$250.)"
"Ouch, did you have your credit cards in there too?"
"Yeah, but I can call and cancel those. But 150 lats! We were at the supermarket, and when we got to the checkout line, I noticed my bag was open. Someone must've lifted it."
I've had my fair share of incidents like that too. A pilfered camera, a stolen credit card, a misplaced wallet. Tina went downstairs to make some phone calls, and returned a few minutes later.
"So what'd you to today?"
"Nothing. Lie in bed all day. I have a cold," I explained.
"Oh, what're you taking for it?"
"Cough drops?"
"Here, I have some stuff." Rummaging through her bag, she produced some vitamin C tablets among other things. I accepted them appreciatively; I know colds are viral and get better by themselves, but at least this stuff would ease the symptoms.
Night came early as usual. A ballet class went into session in a gym across the street, giving me something else to look at in addition to the pedestrian traffic below. For the second consecutive day, I conclude with nothing much to report. I didn't even get very much blogging done. After all, the purpose of a sick day is to not do any work.
Thanks to everyone for their support and comments! Knowing people are reading keeps me motivated to continue the updates!

Mark, I had weird dream. I saw you in my dream and we were in Thailand. We were both sick and looking for some Chinese medicine / remedies. And then I woke up.
Anyway, get well soon. There are 9034808498834850 sites out there that contain pictures of girls in the ballet gyms across the street, but only one that contains pictures of Latvia and the 9-to-5ers need that.
