When in Romania...
(Day 289) "Forget Prague, forget Budapest: Bucharest is where explorers are heading," begins the Lonely Planet. According to the guidebook's opening blurb, Romania's capital is 'Eastern Europe's secret', a city with 'Parisian pretensions'. I didn't make it to Prague, but from what I saw at Budapest, that's a high bar being set.
People who've been here haven't been so upbeat though. The general consensus among those I've met is that it deserves a day or two for the unusual juxtaposition of old and new buildings, and nothing more. It's always interesting to hear other opinions, but my stance in life is to always try for myself and come away with my own ideas. From an aesthetic point of view, Bucharest won't blow anyone away. Buildings of architectural significance find themselves crowned with capitalistic ads, a mall plastered with billboards sits only a couple hundred meters from the hardly worth mentioning Old Town. The boulevard intended to be Champs-Elyseesian appears instead like an urban wasteland. The city has potential, but I just don't see it yet.
Observing life's pace is a different land is always an attraction though. One that can't be labeled on a map, difficult to catch in a photo, or described in words. It's more than just appreciating the beauty of foreign women, it's about seeing the disparity between haves and have-nots. Seeing Roma gypsy families and not understanding their lifestyles. Looking at a random person and wondering where they are for the other 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 55 seconds of the day. Storing these images and experiences as food for thought on those long train journeys.
Romania may be known for Dracula, Elvira, and freakishly talented gymnasts, but it's defining modern day image is the Palace of Parliament. The monstrous building is, in my opinion, the only must-see in Bucharest. A long walk brought me to the gate.
"Can I go in?" I asked the guard, hoping the LP was right about a tour that I could take of the interior.
"Closed today," was the response. "Today is a holiday, National Day."

That explained the fighter jets I saw overheard earlier. "Come back tomorrow, at 10:00am," he told me. If the Palace of Parliament wasn't open, none of the other museums would be either, I reasoned. Well, when in Romania, do as the Romanians do, I suppose. I found where the festivities were taking place, and spent the rest of the day watching traditional dances being performed on stage.
Thanks to everyone for their support and comments! Knowing people are reading keeps me motivated to continue the updates!
